This towering young Dane is reported to be attracting admiring glances from Liverpool and Chelsea, and it’s not difficult to see why. Snapped up by Palermo after his former club FC Midtylland rejected the overtures from Lille and Real Madrid, the brilliantly blonde centre-back has settled nicely into Italian football with some fine performances since joining last July. Athletic, pacy, and dominating in the air, Kjaer has all the attributes to be a top-class defender.
He has a similar playing style to that of Rio Ferdinand or compatriot Daniel Agger – he is remarkably comfortable on the ball and enjoys getting forward, having notched 3 goals so far this season for the Rosanero in an impressive 20 Serie A starts. Palermo president Zamparini is desperate to keep the starlet – ‘It is better for him to be a first team regular here than sit on the bench elsewhere…he is a great kid as well as an excellent player…’ but the player’s agent has alerted many top European clubs to the £11m clause in Kjaer’s contract that would allow him to move on in the summer.
Footie Frog would not be surprised if some of them seized the opportunity. Kjaer is bound to be a star for the Danish team for many years to come, having been called up to the national squad already this season, and should he continue his outstanding progression Palermo will probably need European qualification to keep hold of him.
